 當我躺在病床上，身邊圍繞著各種聲音和紙張的時候，我所得出的結論是：二○○二年時世界比從前更需要歷史學家，尤其是具有懷疑精神的歷史學家。年輕人閱讀該行業一名老邁成員畢生的報導，或許能幫助他們在面對二十一世紀種種晦暗的前景時，除了具備不可或缺的悲觀態度，還能擁有比詨透徹的眼光，以及得自於歷史記憶的見識，而且也應有能力避聞當下狂熱的激情和政治兜售的伎倆。
